Salmon Cheese Spreader
A salmon cheese spreader to go with the Connecticut shaped marble cheese platter I made my mom for Mother's day.
Required Resources: 2 hours, $8
Size: 5" x 2" x 1"
Materials: Stainless Steel sheet, Stainless Steel Pins, Lacewood, 2 Part Epoxy
Finish: Howard's Butcher Block Conditioner (Canuba + Bees Wax + Mineral)
Tools: Band Saw, Belt Sander, Orbital Sander, Water Jet
New Techniques:
Scales on a Salmon: This was one of my first attempts at scaling (the term for the wooden parts of the handle) a blade (well, blade of sorts). I used a two part, quick curing epoxy and some stainless steel pins. I oiled the scales with butcher block oil, however the right choice would have been to use Tung oil. Ooops, next time.
Lessons Learned:
Last (P)Lace(wood): I used lacewood as the cladding for the salmon blade. The rays of the wood looked like scales. Aesthetically it made sense. I did not realize how inelastic lacewood is, however, and ended up splitting the wood while inserting handle pins, after the cladding had been glued to the blade. Nothing you can do about them at that point...
"Salmon"; Not a Good Shape for a Spreader: Who would have thunk-it?
