Yeti Inlay Coaster

The simplest of projects.  Alexa made me a logo for a skateboard (the Shreddin' Yeti) and I turned it into a coaster.

Required Resources: 1 hours, $2

Size: 6"  Diam x 0.1875" Thick

Materials: Mahogany Veneer, Maple Ply, Titebond III Glue

Finish: Natural colored Stain, 3 coats Semi-Gloss Polyurethane Aerosol.

Tools:  Laser Cutter

New Techniques:

Laser Cut Inlay:  Perhaps better described as marquetry, I laser etched the Yeti into the maple and then glued in a mahogany veneer cut out.  It came out rather nicely.

Lessons Learned:

Press in Veneers:  In the name of convenience I used a couple text books to keep pressure on the veneer in the pocket as the glue dried.  When I removed the books, it was obvious that the entire face of the veneer had not bonded to the pocket.   The books did not apply even press across the veneer face.   The proper way to do this is to put the glued up piece in a vacuum press bag.  The vacuum bag applies an even and strong (~14 psi) pressure on the veneer, ensuring that it makes a proper bond with the pocket.
